Backpackers in Venice, when cheap means unique and exclusive

27/05/2025

Think Venice is only for travelers with unlimited budgets? It’s time to change perspective.
Here on the Lido of Venice — just steps from the culture of the Serenissima but away from the crowds — the experience can be surprisingly affordable, authentic, and even… exclusive.

At Hotel Giardinetto, we see it every day: young, curious travelers eager to discover the real spirit of Venice without spending a fortune.

What to do for free (or almost) between Venice and the Lido:

1. Free beaches and breathtaking sunsets
The Lido offers wide, golden beaches that are completely free to access. From the San Nicolò beach to Alberoni, there’s plenty of space to relax, take a dip, or read a book to the sound of the waves. At sunset, the sky lights up with color over the lagoon — a daily show you won’t want to miss, and of course… free.

2. Walks through nature and Liberty-style architecture
One of the best things to do on the Lido is simply walk or bike around. Stroll along the waterfront or get lost among charming Liberty-style villas, hidden gardens, and peaceful tree-lined avenues. You can rent a bike right next to our hotel.

3. Free museums and temporary exhibitions
Venice hosts free exhibitions and cultural spaces year-round. From the Venice Pavilion in the Biennale Gardens (often with free entry) to numerous satellite shows across the city, contemporary art is just a walk away. Some lesser-known churches and palaces also open their doors for free or with a small donation.

4. Discover authentic Venice on foot
Getting lost is the best way to explore Venice. Neighborhoods like Dorsoduro, Castello, and Cannaregio offer a glimpse into local life — quiet alleys, kids playing in open squares, and cozy bacari where you can stop for a cheap cicchetto.

5. Open-air festivals and cultural events
In spring and summer, Venice and the Lido come alive with free concerts, outdoor movie nights, and local festivals. Just keep an eye on local listings (or ask us at reception!) to catch the best ones.

At the Lido, you don’t need a dream budget for a dream experience. Just a backpack, a little sense of adventure… and maybe a smart room at Hotel Giardinetto, the perfect starting point to explore it all.
